The Botanical Gardens at Asheville

We are an independent non-profit organization housing a collection of plants native to the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Our admission is free, but donations are appreciated and memberships are encouraged. Western North Carolina Orchid Society 

The WNCOS is a non-profit corporation composed of people who share the excitement and joy of growing orchids. The society's function is to meet monthly to share orchid growing experiences and to gather new information that would enhance the growing experience. The WNCOS was formally organized in September 1962 and is an affiliate of the American Orchid Society.

We meet the third Tuesday of each month at the Community Action Opportunities 25 Gaston Street
Asheville, NC 28801. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. (No Meeting in September due to the annual auction!)

The county cooperative extension service site for information about many topics related to Lawn & Garden and crop production.

 

The North Carolina Arboretum 

The North Carolina Arboretum is a 434-acre public garden located within the Bent Creek Experimental Forest of the Pisgah National Forest. Surrounded by the dense folds of the botanically diverse Southern Appalachian Mountains, the Arboretum is nestled in one of the most beautiful natural garden settings in America.

Ohio State University WebGarden  The Department of Horticulture maintains this website about ornamental plants, insect & diseases, etc.  Their PlantFacts database has merged several digital collections developed at Ohio State University to become an international knowledge bank and multimedia learning center.  The database has over 260,000 pages

 

Daylilies: The American Hemerocallis Society  The AHS is organized exclusively for educational and scientific purposes, and especially to promote, encourage, and foster the development and improvement of the genus Hemerocallis and public interest therein.

 

 

NCDOT, Roadside Environmental Unit, Wildflowers on NC Roadsides  This site is intended as a reference to identify the wildflowers planted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation as well as some of the naturally occurring ones growing along North Carolina highways. Both botanical and common names are listed on the following pages. Photographs with descriptions and planting information are arranged by color.

 

Wildflower Nursery, Western North Carolinas Expert Supplier  This nursery is a licensed company specializing in native and hard to find wild native flowering plants & trees. Plants are gathered from the mountainous regions of Western North Carolina.

 

TNC Invasive Species Initiative page  The Invasive Species Initiative is The Nature Conservancy's response to abating the damage caused to native biodiversity by the human-facilitated introduction of non-native, harmful invasive species. This web site provides many resources designed to help all conservationists deal most effectively with invasive species.  The site is sponsored by Department of Vegetable Crops at The University of California, Davis, CA.

 

Invasive Species: The Nation's Invasive Species Information System  On Invasivespeciesinfo.gov you can learn about the impacts of invasive species and the Federal government's response, as well as read select species profiles and find links to agencies and organizations dealing with invasive species issues.

 

WeedInfo Site  The purpose of this Web site is to provide information about recently introduced weeds or weeds which are not adequately described in currently available texts, and for rapid communication of emerging weed management issues.  This site is intended to supplement, not replace, the available weed ID guides, management references, and other Web-based resources.

Plants of North Carolina  The Vascular Flora of North Carolina  Plants are listed alphabetically(Latin) by genera. Many of the plants are shown with Latin names only. Common names are not always available for every plant and can also be very confusing as the same name may be given to many different species.

NC Native Plant Society  The purpose of the Society is to promote enjoyment and conservation of native plants and their habitats through education, protection, and propagation.  This site is an excellent source about native plants, habit, culture, etc. Also, has extensive links to plant related websites
